A builders merchant is a store worker selling building and DIY materials to the construction industry, self-employed tradespeople and the general public. They sell products such as timber, sand, cement, materials for building, painting and decorating materials, electrical and plumbing supplies, hand and power tools, gardening equipment, landscaping materials, iron mongery, kitchen and bathroom units and all associated products.
They are required to deal with customer enquiries and orders in person and by telephone. They may also be responsible for stock control and ordering and finance issues. They will be required to handle building materials which may require lifting goods and loading/unloading vehicles, manually or with lift trucks.
Salaries start at approximately £12,000 a year and may go up to £50,000 for a manager of a large store.
